Report: Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox Series X lets you choose between resolution and performance, PS5 does not
Console versions of Cyberpunk 2077 are finally making their way out to the press, and it appears there’s one big option available only on Xbox Series X.
According to VGC, when testing the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Cyberpunk 2077 – which are compatible on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 respectively, the site spotted a choice between playing on a higher resolution or smoother performance on Xbox Series X.
“The PS4 version of Cyberpunk appears to default to 60fps on PlayStation 5,” said VGC’s Andy Robinson. “But there’s seemingly no option to sacrifice frame rate for a higher resolution like on Xbox’s next-gen console.”
A Reddit post from someone who managed to get hold of the Xbox One version of CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG ahead of street date had also confirmed that the Series X allowed you the option to choose between resolution and performance. Many assumed this would be the case on PS5 too.
This disparity, however, is not an exception. Robinson also notes that a number of other games including Star Wars: Squadrons, Call of Duty: Warzone and Rocket League had recently received performance updates on Xbox Series X, but not PS5.
This is likely down to how much more integrated Microsoft’s backwards compatibility support is. In a Eurogamer interview, Rocket League developer Psyonix said, “Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X/S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console.”
It’s worth noting that Xbox Series X and PS5 owners will still only be playing a last-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077. The next-gen upgrades – which will implement ray-tracing – is expected to arrive sometime in 2021, and will be free to those who have already bought the Xbox One or PS4 version.
Whichever version of Cyberpunk you own, you’ll also be able to connect to GOG Galaxy to claim free digital goodies and in-game items.
Ahead of the RPG’s release tomorrow, there have been reports that certain images in the game can trigger epileptic seizures. CD Projekt Red has responded that it will be including a new warning while also working on a permanent solution in a future update.
